Admissions

Admissions Process for children ages 18 months to 6 years

We appreciate that you are considering Austin Montessori School for your child and your family.  Choosing a school that complements and supports your family’s values plays an integral part in your child’s development as a citizen of the world.

The admissions process at Austin Montessori School is designed to provide you with information about our school.  The School Showings and Prospective Parent Presentations outlined below are filled with valuable information regarding both Montessori philosophy and pedagogy, as well as early childhood development.

1) Attend a School Showing:  Attend a School Showing at either the north or south campus.  Showings offer an overview of Montessori history, philosophy, and curriculum in the classroom setting.  This is an excellent opportunity to learn about Montessori education and Austin Montessori School.  Showings are held from September through May.  School Showings are for adults only, but infants in arms are welcome to attend.

2) Schedule a Classroom Observation:  Once you have attended a School Showing, we invite you to schedule a classroom observation for either the north or south campus. Observations offer a window into the daily life of a classroom designed specifically to meet the needs of the young child.  Observations are for adults only.  Please call 512-892-0253 ext. 20 or email admissions@austinmontessori.org to schedule an observation.

3) Submit an Application:  Apply on line any time.  A non-refundable $100 fee is required with each application. Once we have received an application, your child will be added to our waiting pool and you will begin receiving information regarding our upcoming admissions events via email. Children are selected from the waiting pool based on a number of factors designed to create balance within the individual classroom communities. Apply Here

4) Attend Prospective Parent Presentations:  Parents interested in learning more about Austin Montessori School and the Montessori approach are encouraged to attend a core series of three Prospective Parent Presentations. Attendance of these presentations is taken into consideration when offering placement. These presentations may be attended in any order and will be repeated during the spring semester. These presentations are for adults only, but infants in arms are welcome to attend. To register, complete an inquiry.

Montessori Philosophy

“It is a mental chemistry that takes place in the child, producing a chemical transformation.  These impressions not only penetrate the mind of the child, they form it; they become incarnated, for the child makes his own ‘mental flesh’ in using the things that are in his environment.  We have called this type of mind the ‘absorbent mind’ and it is difficult for us to conceive the magnitude of its powers.”  ~ Dr. Maria Montessori

Join us in discovering the astonishing characteristics and power of the Absorbent Mind of the child under the age of six.   Learn how the Montessori classroom along with the prepared home environment can best support the sensitive periods of development unique to the child from birth-to-six years.

Social and Emotional Development

Children enter into the world equipped with their own network of vital programming designed for survival. Even the tiniest of infants has ways to communicate his or her needs. As children grow, they acquire an ever increasing skill set to allow them to engage with the world around them. What they lack in life experience, they make up for with a strong will and determination to not just survive, but to thrive.  Parents and other adults living and working with young children will be better prepared to support this development through an understanding of what the young child’s true needs are and how they go about meeting them through engagement with both the physical world and the people with whom he shares his life.

At Home with Montessori

Considering the young child’s need for belonging, as well as his or her ever increasing capabilities and desire to contribute to family life requires careful reflection on the part of the adults.  Each family is unique, and although Montessori principles incorporate the child’s point of view along with the adult’s, every family makes its own choices about how to make their home inviting to all members. Please join us as we explore some ways families may create a home in which all family members feel respected, supported and valued.
