The “How to Talk” Series

The “How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk” series offered at Austin Montessori School is based on the work of Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. It is presented in the context of the Montessori approach to parenting and whole-child education.

In six two-hour sessions, parents learn to:

  • Engage their child’s willing cooperation
  • Stay present with a child who is experiencing emotions such as frustration, disappointment, and anger
  • Express their (the parents’) own emotions without being hurtful
  • Set firm yet loving boundaries
  • Use alternatives to punishment and assist children in gaining self-control
  • Resolve family conflicts peacefully

Later in the school year, a second workshop “Siblings Without Rivalry,” is offered. In these six two-hour sessions parents learn to:

  • Help siblings respectfully express their feelings (positive and negative) towards each other
  • Treat children based on need and still be fair
  • Avoid placing siblings in roles so that each child comes to become his or her most whole self
  • Help children work out their own solutions when in disagreement
  • Problem-solve with siblings so that they can move toward resolving their conflicts
