Every school can communicate better with families about something that matters more than almost anything else: where a child actually is in their development. It’s hard work and I want to be candid that we’re always reaching for it. But I also want to tell you why we approach it the way we do, because the way we talk about your child’s growth is one of the most important components of the partnership we share.
Here’s the tension I understand in my bones. Most of us grew up with a particular picture of what “knowing how your child is doing” looks like: a grade, a score, a number that captures your skill at one fixed point in time. I grew up about as inside that system as you can get. Rural northeastern North Carolina, a public school where my mother taught fourth grade and my father sat on the board of education. So when a number feels like the natural way to track progress, I get it.
That instinct came from somewhere real. The trouble is that a single measurement is an incredibly narrow window into a whole human being. Is acquiring skills important? Absolutely. It always has been. Though I’d gently point out that in a world where AI is turning raw intellect into a commodity, the why and the how of learning matter more than ever. A child who understands what they’re doing, and loves doing it, is building something a test score can’t capture. The range is the whole point.
One of the deepest failings of the traditional model is that it sorts children by their birthday. Your most defining feature becomes your born-on date, and you’re grouped accordingly. But that’s simply not how development works.
Some children burst into fluent reading at four and a half. Some get there at seven. Both are right on time. Thanks to decades of advances in neuropsychology and brain imaging, from MRI to fMRI to real developmental science, we now understand this isn’t a hopeful philosophy. It’s how human beings are built.
That same science is also why we screen. Starting at age five, we do internal screenings so that if something like dyslexia or dyscalculia is present, we can see it early. The research here is overwhelming and consistent: early intervention is precisely what gives a child the best possible outcome. We’d much rather know, and act, while the window is wide open.

Everything I’ve said so far is about the child. But there is a second relationship that matters just as much, and that is the one we share with you, the family. The experience of the child sits at the center of our philosophy, and it also sits at the center of how we communicate with you. We are genuinely invested in meeting families where they ask to be met. We know that for some families, an understanding of their child’s academic growth is more easily held in data, numbers, and trajectory, and that is a fair thing to want. This is why we are actively working on improving how we communicate with our families about their child’s development, so that families can see where their child sits within a developmental range. What we hope to create is a shared process, one that balances communication and transparency with what growth inside a Montessori education actually looks like, and the deep correlation it has to the evolution of the brain.
There’s a reason that matters, and it lives in the brain itself. More than a century ago, Maria Montessori described what she called “sensitive periods,” windows when a child is powerfully, almost irresistibly drawn to a particular kind of learning: language, order, movement, fine detail, number. She had no brain scans. She simply watched children, closely and for years. What’s remarkable is that modern neuroscience has caught up to her. Those windows line up with real periods of heightened neuroplasticity, when the brain is rapidly forming and strengthening the neural pathways tied to that exact skill. The connections a child uses are reinforced and insulated; the ones they don’t are gently pruned away. The brain, quite literally, is built by experience.
That is also why a Montessori classroom puts a material in a child’s hands before it puts a symbol on a page. When a child holds the quantity of six, the learning isn’t abstract. It’s sensory, physical, and lived, which is precisely the kind of experience the developing brain is wired to absorb and keep. And it’s why the timing can’t be forced. You can no more schedule a sensitive period than you can schedule the morning a child takes their first step. What you can do is notice it, prepare for it, and meet the child right there, in the moment they are most ready to learn, and harness it.
Why our timeline looks different
In Montessori, the trajectory of learning is more flexible, more adaptable, and in some cases more open-ended than the traditional system. We are not drilling children competitively on what they should know by the end of first grade, second grade, third grade. That’s a real difference, and I want to name it plainly.
Let me be precise about what “flexible” means, because it is the opposite of loose. It does not mean fewer expectations or a softer bar, and it is anything but improvised. It is rigorous, and it is grounded in what we now understand about how the brain actually develops. In a traditional classroom, time is fixed and mastery is simply whatever a child has absorbed when the unit ends. We hold the opposite steady: mastery is non-negotiable, and we let the timing meet the child where the science says they are ready. Nothing is skipped and nothing is watered down. A child moves forward when they genuinely understand the work, not before, and not because the calendar says they should. That is a higher standard, not a lower one.
We are deeply aware of what grade-level work looks like. We present and support the full range of academics a child is exposed to. What changes is when that polished, output-based moment arrives, the “watch me solve this long-division problem on paper” moment. Because in our classrooms, every new concept arrives first as a concrete, sensorial experience.
This is the part that surprises families most. We have children many would call “first graders” doing long multiplication and long division, work that in a traditional setting wouldn’t appear until third or fourth grade. They’re exploring more advanced concepts earlier, just not on paper at first. They’re doing it with materials, because they’re learning what multiplication actually means.
A child isn’t pushing symbols around a worksheet. They’re holding the quantity of six in their hand. They place six six-bead bars together and see and feel that it forms a square. They stack those squares and discover it builds a cube. That child is constructing a mathematical model in their own mind.
In an early elementary classroom, there might be five different materials all built around long multiplication, each with an ever-decreasing control of error, so the children gradually carry themselves into abstraction. First they work with the materials. Then they begin to need them less. Then they’re doing it on paper, having arrived there, with the kind of understanding that holds, because it was never about speed or competition in the first place.

What stays constant
If I could leave you with one image, it wouldn’t be a curriculum map or a screening report. It would be your child, bent over a tray of golden beads, completely absorbed, building, in their own hands and in their own time, an understanding that no one handed to them.
That is the thing we are here to protect. The maps, the data, the careful conversations: all of it exists to serve that one moment, and to let you see it the way we do. Because what we’re really doing here isn’t measuring your child against a calendar. We’re watching them become who they are, and there is no greater privilege than having you beside us to watch it happen.
