If you are looking for authentic Montessori in Austin, it helps to know that very few schools using the Montessori name are recognized by the association Maria Montessori founded to protect her work. Austin Montessori School is one of them. We are recognized by the Association Montessori Internationale, the most exacting standard in the field, and we have practised Montessori close to its source for nearly sixty years, across three campuses, carrying children through the full arc from sixteen months to the adolescent years.

Our three campuses
Sunset Trail, in South Austin, is our main campus, home to the full early arc from sixteen months to twelve years. Great Northern, in North Austin, welcomes the youngest children, from sixteen months to six years. Gaines Creek, on land near Oak Hill in the southwest, is home to our Adolescent Community, for young people from twelve to fifteen, and the only AMI recognized adolescent program in Austin.
Families come from all over Austin
A full, authentic Montessori arc is rare, so many of our families make the drive, from across the city and the Hill Country, to our campuses in North, South, and West Austin. We know that for some, that distance is simply too far.
Since our founding in 1967, we have watched it take root and flourish across this city. We are proud of that growth, and of the schools we count as partners in bringing this education to the children of Austin.

How to find an authentic Montessori program near you
One reliable marker of authenticity is technology: a genuine Montessori environment is screen-free in the early years, because young children learn best through real, hands-on experience rather than screens.
Because the word Montessori is not protected, the most useful thing you can do, wherever you live, is to look past the label. Ask whether the guides are AMI trained, whether children stay with the same class for a full three year cycle, and whether you can observe a classroom while the children are working.
