  • Austin Montessori School is a private school for children and adolescents from 16 months to 15 years of age, and the oldest Montessori school in Austin, Texas.

    Our mission is to guide the development of each child towards their full and unknown potential.  We cultivate compassion and respect, independence and belonging, and freedom and self-discipline, in rich academic and social environments that honor the complementary needs of the individual and the community.  We provide an educational setting that is inclusive, recognizes the authentic nature of the child, and nurtures a reverence for the natural order of the universe.
  • Early Childhood Early Childhood
    Austin Montessori School's Early Childhood programs for children aged 16 months - 6 years old offer full and half-day options, five days a week. Our all-year programs are in session during spring break and through the summer.
  • Elementary Elementary
    The Montessori elementary curriculum is designed as an integrated whole serving the needs of children from 6 - 12 years old. We also offer after-school care, and enrichment programs during spring break and the summer.
  • Adolescent Adolescent
    Austin Montessori School’s Center for Work and Study at Gaines Creek is a unique educational environment for students aged 12 - 15 years old following Dr. Maria Montessori's vision. We are the only Montessori Adolescent Program in Austin.

    "When searching for a school for our older son, who is now eight years old, we must have visited a dozen schools across town and observed what was taking place in the classroom.  We felt that Austin Montessori integrated independence and structure in such a beautiful way that was unmatched elsewhere. ... As they began transitioning from the Children's House to Early Elementary, we visited other schools with strong reputations to see if there might be something there that we were missing.  We saw a one-size-fits-all approach that contrasted with the Montessori approach, where each child is learning because they are met where they are and progressing at a pace that is appropriate to their needs."

Of Interest In Our Community

  • Placement of New Children into Early and Upper Elementary Communities

    In this season, it is a joy to observe in the Elementary communities and witness how quickly new and beginning cycle children integrate into a mixed-age classroom, in which older children support, lead, and work collaboratively with younger children. A hallmark of flourishing Montessori Elementary classrooms is that children self-organize into a wide variety of work and play groups, and each child identifies as part of a whole community. Children are not artificially grouped and tend not to self-form social silos with same-aged children in terms of lessons, work, or community participation.  

    While some Elementary families are yet in a season of transition into new communities, others are naturally curious and imagine what the next transition will look like and what community their child(ren) will enter. At some schools, and perhaps in AMS seasons past, parent requests for specific community placements carried significant weight. However, with reflection, we now take a different approach, which we believe serves the best interests of each child and each community, considering elements that individual parents may not have access to. In this article, I hope to give you helpful insight into how we approach placing each transitioning child into a new community.
