Screenagers: The Elementary School Age Edition
As part of Austin Montessori School’s ongoing series, Parenting in the Digital Age, we are pleased to present a private screening of the new documentary film, Screenagers: The Elementary Age Edition.
Date: Wednesday, October 9 at 6:30 pm
Location: Adolescent Community Campus, 5677 Oak Boulevard
The screening will be immediately followed by a panel discussion led by Grae Baker, Jinny Gonzalez, Nadine Gardener, and Jesse Gevirtz.
Choosing a Montessori education for your child defines a path and parenting style that, at times, goes against mainstream trends in society. Montessori education is a framework for human development that fulfills the developmental needs of children, which begs the question - where do media and technology fit in? When is the right time to introduce certain types of technology from a developmental perspective? How can a parent do so mindfully so that it is a constructive rather than potentially harmful experience? Many of us struggle with navigating these difficult questions in an ever-changing digital landscape.
Regardless of where you are on your parenting journey with technology, you don't want to miss our upcoming screening of the new documentary Screenagers: Elementary School Age Edition. The documentary was created by physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston, who was prompted to research this subject as she saw the impact of screen time on her own children and on her pediatric patients and the ensuing friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time.

In the film, Dr. Ruston takes a deeply personal approach as she explores the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics, and internet addiction. Through insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, Screenagers reveals how time spent with technology impacts children's development and offers solutions for empowering them to navigate the digital world and find balance.
Following the documentary screening, there will be a panel discussion led by Grae Baker, AMS Head of School, and the Early Childhood, Elementary, and Adolescent Level Directors to discuss why having this conversation around parenting in the digital age is crucial to ensure the healthy development of children and adolescents in our school community. We will share helpful resources to facilitate meaningful conversations in and among families.
This event is open to AMS faculty and parents, grandparents, and primary caregivers of children enrolled at Austin Montessori School. As space is limited, we ask that you register only if you can commit to attending.
